As I type this article, news reports are still flowing live video and pictures of a massive protest and an unbelievable assault that has occurred on the United States Capitol building.

People who not all that long ago were rightly condemning the violence that occurred during the riots over the spring and summer of 2020 are now participating in some of the same if not worse behavior by attacking the United States Capitol. If Antifa or some other left-leaning extremist group were doing what they are doing now they would be up in arms and rightly so.

It is the first time something like this has happened since British troops overran the White House and burned it down in 1814.

As of now one person has been confirmed to have been shot and is currently in critical condition. Also, there are reports of numerous suspicious devices that are being investigated at this time. Several U.S. Capitol Police Officers have been injured.

This is outrageous, unacceptable, and embarrassing for our nation. The political divide in this nation has reached an unacceptable level. Both liberals and conservatives bare the burden of blame for the fever pitch that we find ourselves in. To be sure it has not been a fast process in getting to where we are now. And no one side bears all the blame.

In my last article, I stressed the importance of both sides to show grace and kindness to one another to allow for discussion and debate to work through the issues we face in this nation. Admittedly, I don’t know where we go from here. The mess we find ourselves in is deep. There is a complete lack of trust in our government on both sides of the political spectrum. It will no doubt be a long difficult road to restoring that trust.

One thing is for certain. There can be no honest and open discussion when violence is involved. These acts of mob violence from both sides must end.

Those responsible for today’s violence will and must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
